Why You Should Practice Down-Regulation Breathing After Your Next Workout

Easily one of the best habits I’ve started in a LONG time.

“If you’re losing that opportunity, post-exercise, you’re leaving gains on the table” — Dr. Andy Galpin

Dr. Galpin recently said that on The Huberman Lab podcast. Interestingly, he wasn’t talking about supplements, hydration, or even nutrient timing. He was talking about breathing.

“There’s a ton of variation with what you can do.” Dr. Galpin goes on to say. “The easiest thing is; do something that calms you down. Most likely, that’s going to be as much nasal breathing as you can possibly do.”

Dr. Galpin’s protocol hit me at the right time, and I’ve been experimenting with the devilishly simple protocol for more than a month. And while I don’t have any studies to back it up, it’s easily one of the best habits I’ve started in a LONG time.

For me, it goes like this. Finish workout. Hydrate. Clean-up. All that happens in about ninety seconds.
