We’re Doomed And The Whole Will Smith Thing Proves It

Smith made a mistake. No one was hurt. Move on.

The Romans may have invented the crucifixion, but it took Twitter to perfect it.

Will Smith is only the latest victim. A once-revered actor turned overnight pariah.

Was it wrong for Smith to slap Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife? Sure was.

Comedians on stage, no matter the joke, are forever and always off-limits. They have permission to quip about abortion, make puns about dead puppies, or poke fun at the wheelchair guy in the crowd.

No one is safe. Nor should they be.

But to call a slap violence, to linger on it for this long; that’s far too harsh. Actually, it insults what real violence is by comparison.

Slapping is an instant warning and there needs to be more instant warnings and fewer permanent punishments in this world.

Unfortunately, we’d rather hide behind free speech when it suits our agenda, and censor it when it doesn’t. Because we’re too damn chicken to get slapped when we’re clearly asking for it.

Not that Rock was asking for it. But that’s part of the issue too. We should live like someone is always right there to correct us when we get out of line
