Few things sink the fitness lifestyle faster than unrealistic expectations.
We expect a week’s worth of workouts to burn twenty pounds.
We think skipping dessert today will make our arms firmer tomorrow.
We believe fitness is some sort of bulletproof vest that will forever protect us from pain, tweaks, pulls, and strains.
And when none of this happens, we give up.
That’s why it’s so important to understand what progress is.
Progress is doing the same exercise repeatedly until you get it right. And then doing it forever.
Progress is training when things don’t change. When we don’t feel like it. When there are a million things we’d rather do.
Sometimes, progress is nothing more than hitting the gym and going through the motions. And that’s just fine.
You don’t always have to break records. Ignore the Instabook experts. Stop the woe is me chatter that says, “I used to play ball,” and “I remember when I could … “
Update the ideal version of yourself to someone who recognizes what progress is. Progress is nothing more than putting in the work today. Tomorrow. And the day after that. Everything else is fleeting.
