Some people need to be taught how to feel.

They’re more shadows, really. Observing intently, gathering information about emotions they will display as their own when the time comes. They understand the concept of emotion — they can even feel the highs and lows. But it’s more like a traffic jam than expressway. More like a test they aren’t sure they passed.

Others, those born with all their fingers and toes and feelings in all the right places, don’t quite get it. To them, feelings are as natural as yawning. Taken for granted. Something they could never imagine having to practice.

Drugs can help. That’s why so many humans with broken feelers indulge. Because even numb is a feeling. But drugs often make you lose the parts of you that remind you of you. Not the best idea if connecting with something more profound is the goal.

That’s where movies come in.

Movies can entertain. Movies can inspire. Movies can show us a character precisely like us, crippled with grief and seething with denial, and let us see how they survive. Movies like ‘Pig.’
