Watching an athlete progress is priceless. It’s that improvement that’s kept me coaching for decades.

That, and the fact that I hate pain and will do anything I can to fix it.

Progress, however, isn’t cheap. It costs plenty of time and lots of energy. But most of all, progress costs excitement.

Does that mean every workout is a slog, void of joy, and lacking pleasure?

Not at all. It means that worthwhile training can feel boring in the moment. Good news is, boring is often precisely what commitment feels like.

“The only way to become excellent is to be endlessly fascinated by doing the same thing over and over,” James Clear wrote in his book ‘Atomic Habits.’

“You have to fall in love with boredom.”
