The workout matters.

The sets, the reps, the exercises, the effort; all that matters. And it matters a lot.

But beyond the effort, past the sweat, the broken records, and the fist bumps, there’s something else. Something that, depending on the day, matters maybe as much and sometimes far more.

It’s called detachment.

The opportunity to be singularly focused on something other than the world, if for only a few minutes. To get lost in the work. To be present by default.

A chance to put down the phone, leave the office behind, and give your mind the space it desperately needs.

The workout matters. But often, what matters far more is the distance the workout provides between who we are and who we act like. A time, no matter how short, to stop submitting and finally overcome.
