Her legs are nearly worthless; she gets lost often and is 105 years old.

In dog years.

Her name is Belle, and the vet just told us she needs to gain weight.

“She’s wasting away,” she said, and “here’s some medicine to keep her comfortable.”

Days are tough, nights are tougher, and her nemesis is “The Stair.” A nearly camouflaged six inches of elevation between the inside and outside.

On her own, Belle contemplates the impassable juggernaut. Occasionally, she makes a circle, gains speed like some committed parkour superhero, and goes for it. That’s usually when you hear a fall, followed by our dejected husky picking herself up, mired in defeat.
